about Matt Kirk and the Güeyfarers
A consummate musician; a prolific writer, virtuoso guitarist and versatile sideman, Matt Kirk has been a go-to lead guitarist for everyone from storied guitarist Monte Montgomery to Josh Baca (of the legendary Baca conjunto fam), meaning there was little surprise that his long-anticipated debut album featured numerous guest performances from the aforementioned Montgomery, as well as Kevin 'Shinyribs' Russell, the Grooveline Horns, fiddlers Gene Elders (Ace in the Hole, Lyle Lovett's Large Band) and Ron Knuth (Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard), and steel player Tommy Detamore (Johnny Bush, Clay Baker).
Matt's Texas music roots run deep, as he comes from a musical family headed by matriarch Sylvia Kirk, well-known and respected throughout the San Antonio-area community. Matt, a new father, named after his first son after family friend Augie Meyers, of Sir Douglas Quintet and Texas Tornadoes fame, of whom Matt incorporates into his sound, as well as other Central Texas inspirations including, but not limited to, the Arc Angels/Storyville, Jimmy LaFave, Los Lonely Boys, Gruene Hall and the Guadalupe River. We are currently prioritizing acoustic solo/duo shows for Matt, but he does often tour with a full-band, the Güeyfarers, that includes Jimmy Hartman (Josh Abbott, Del Castillo) on bass, drummer Brandon Custard (Aaron Stephens), Matt Cain (Devil’s Hollow, Spank) on keys, and Houston’s Eric Demmer (BB King, Gatemouth Brown) on sax. Matt holds down a regular full-band Gruene Hall residency generally once-a-month, and has recently opened for acts such as Blues Traveler, Sixpence None the Richer, Kevin Bacon and a solo tour opening all Texas dates for the Gypsy Kings.
